Taped in excess of 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD is a historic story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a kid named Mason (a leap forward execution by Ellar Coltrane), who actually experiences childhood with screen before our eyes. Featuring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s guardians and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD graphs the rough landscape of youth like no other film has in the recent past. Depictions of puberty from street excursions and family meals to birthdays and graduations and all the minutes in the middle of get to be extraordinary, set to a soundtrack traversing the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. Childhood is both a nostalgic time container of the later past and a tribute to growing up and child rearing. It’s difficult to watch Mason and his family without pondering our own particular adventure. (c) Sundance Film Fest
